Riverbed to develop PCoIP optimization, improve VDI performance

With the PC-over-IP (PCoIP) protocol, enterprises have been able to display rich graphics and streaming video in VMware View virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environments more efficiently—even over low-bandwidth wide area network (WAN) connections. But real-world VDI performance over high-latency WAN links has its limits. Riverbed Technology recently announced a partnership with the protocol's developer at VMworld 2011 aimed at optimizing PCoIP performance.

PCoIP developer Teradici Corp., which formed an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) agreement with VMware in late 2008, named Riverbed as the first and only member of its newly-launched Network Solutions Partner Program at VMworld. Through the partnership, Riverbed will engineer PCoIP optimization to improve VDI performance via its Steelhead WAN optimization appliances.

"Latency is probably the biggest factor in VDI response time. By compressing the traffic and accelerating the traffic, you can make it feel like it's a local link," said Zeus Kerravala, senior vice president and distinguished research analyst at Yankee Group. "You can build data centers that are closer to the branches and muscle your way through it with lots of bandwidth and lots of servers, but [optimization] is a simpler and cheaper way to [improve VDI performance]."

Riverbed has already developed optimization algorithms for Microsoft Corp.'s Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), which VMware View also supports, and Citrix's proprietary Independent Computing Architecture (ICA) protocol. Many Steelhead customers have begrudgingly deployed lower-resolution View desktops using RDP due to Riverbed's lack of PCoIP optimization, according to Miles Kelly, senior director of product marketing at Riverbed.

"While virtual desktop environments may be very attractive from an IT perspective, they can actually lead to some very significant performance challenges and tax the end user [experience]," Kelly said. "PCoIP opens a channel that allows for high-definition video and multimedia ... but the challenge is that when you deploy that [protocol] over networks that have [significant latency], it could be a real challenge to get that 'pure PC' experience."

Riverbed declined to say when the PCoIP optimization will be available, only specifying that it will be released in 2012. Kelly declined to identify what elements of the PCoIP protocol Riverbed would target for optimization, noting that his company’s engineers have only just started their work.

"Anytime we build an optimization for any content type, first and foremost we're looking for redundant traffic," Kelly said. "In general, we're providing not only the data deduplication but also providing quality of service rules ... [such as] in ICA, [where] we can understand different types of [virtual desktop] traffic passing through the Steelheads and prioritize keystrokes over print jobs."

Hybrid cloud computing will affect VDI performance

Although WAN pros will welcome any means of improving VDI performance, Riverbed's eventual PCoIP optimization will have wider implications, according to Eugene Alfaro, director of IT engineering services at Cornerstone Technologies, an IT consulting and professional services firm in San Jose, Calif.

Hybrid cloud computing trends will affect VDI performance over the WAN as virtual desktops and the resources they must access get split up, Alfaro said. When those resources contain rich multimedia or are graphics-intensive Software as a Service (SaaS) portals—or the desktops themselves are in the cloud—PCoIP optimization will become a requirement, he said.

"Let's say I've got virtual desktops in my private cloud. But wait a minute– the resource my virtual desktops want to access is my CRM data in the public cloud," Alfaro said. "You always want to put the virtual desktops closest to the data they work with ... [so] how do you ensure [VDI] performance over the Internet?"

Riverbed's partnership with Teradici "is really laying down the foundation for being able to do virtual desktops over the Internet," Alfaro said.

"The greatest value here is in the ability to [move VDI] from private to public clouds—the optimization gives us that flexibility," he said.

System Mechanic from iolo is a huge compilation of tools designed to clean up and improve the performance of your computer. You know how it goes... clean install, you're feeling fresh as a daisy and life is good. Then a couple of weeks later you start feeling not so clean. Windows is taking longer to start up, programs take longer to load and the BSDs start kicking in. Eventually you start thinking about doing a clean install of Windows. That's where I was sitting a couple of weeks ago, but instead I decided to try System Mechanic. System Mechanic claims to do the following:

Fixes errors, crashes and freezes
Boosts internet speeds
Speeds up Windows start time
Restores system stability
Cleans out clutter and junk files
Prevents slowdowns and bottlenecks
Plugs security holes
Clears out private data
Improves gaming experience

Can system Mechanic make old Betsy run quicker and smoother, or is it time to format? Since iolo uses a "Whole Home Licensing model", System Mechanic can be used on all PCs in the home; so both my work laptop and desktop PC were put to the test.

The first thing I did was gather up some "before" information, such as average boot time, average time to move a folder, average net speed (from speedtest.org), upload and download FTP speeds, and FPS from a couple of games. Then I loaded up System Mechanic and put it to work. First up, analyze system performance. Not surprisingly, both of my systems tested "poor" with a ton of problems found on both machines.

Note: Speed tests were each done multiple times to determine an average; and net tests were done in rapid succession to ensure that time of day and day to day fluctuations would not affect the test.

The NetBooster Challenge

One of the individual tools available in System Mechanic is "NetBooster", designed to increase internet speed and stability by optimizing connection settings. Using speedtest.org to measure my upload and download speeds, I was able to get an average before and after the use of System Mechanic. I got a real kick out of running this test, because it didn't quite work as planned!

As you can see, my download speed was greatly reduced after running the NetBooster tool. Fortunately there is an option to revert to original settings. After rolling it back, my connection returned to full health. After doing the final optimization with PC TotalCare PowerTools, my connection did ultimately gain an unexpected boost.

Summary:

In the course of two weeks, System Mechanic has done 290 repairs / optimizations on my laptop. Normally that would make me a little bit nervous and I'd be expecting the machine to blow up at any moment. It wouldn't be the first time that I've had to do a system restore after fiddling with a tool that has promised to increase performance. However, as of the moment, System Mechanic has saved me from doing a clean install of Windows. Both my laptop and desktop PCs gained a significant and noticeable boost from using the program. System Mechanic is really simple to use, and all of the tests run very quickly, except for the hard drive defrag which can take up to an hour or so.

The NetBooster Challenge was kind of funky, but ultimately, my net speeds did improve with the use of System Mechanic's full meal deal, which is the PC TotalCare PowerTools. I was also amused when the program tagged CCleaner for removal as potentially harmful software. After using the all-in-one tools my machines have continued to perform at improved speeds. However, the program will find new issues on a daily basis; typically registry errors and system clutter. I also ended up turning off the Anti-Malware Monitoring option, as it did not recognize my registered version of Malwarebytes. However, SM does come with its own System Guard, intended to help cut back on malicious activity.

System Mechanic comes with a number of diagnostic tools which are fun to muck around with, such as Advanced System Information, NetSpeed Analyzer and System Change Tracker. It also features a number of tools that I consider mandatory, such as Startup Manager and Process Manager. Apparently the program comes with over 50 tools, but I didn't count them!

I already had a small set of tools that I knew and trusted, but what I really wanted was a good all-in-one package. Spending a whole night formatting, reinstalling and downloading updates is not my idea of a good time. I haven't had a single crash or BSD on either machine since I started using System Mechanic. So in my opinion, System Mechanic would be worth every penny. The program is currently on sale for $10 off, bringing the price down to $39.95 for a year of service.

Not sure how long it will be valid for, but I found a promotional iolo page which offers a coupon discount for $20 USD, so that puts the price at $29.95.

Open the recycling bin and press "Empty Recycling Bin." This will permanently delete the temp files from your system.

Open "Computer" (or "My Computer" in Windows XP) and right-click on your hard drive (drive C). Select "Properties" from the context menu and then open the "Tools" tab.

Press the "Defragment Now" button in the Defragmentation section. The Windows defragmentation tool will open up onscreen.

Disabling Startup Programs

Open Start > Run and type "msconfig" into the text box. Hit Enter. The Microsoft Configuration Utility will open up onscreen. Here you may modify options regarding your computer's setup and operation.

Select the "Startup" tab.

Deselect the startup items you wish to disable from automatic startup and hit "Apply" then "OK" to save your changes. It must be noted, however, that some of these programs are required to boot automatically for your laptop to function correctly. Tips For Speeding Up Windows XP - Without Utilizing Defrag

If you're still relying on 'Defrag' to improve system performance, you are behind the times. Defragmenting is the process of reorganizing all files on a hard drive so that each file is arranged into a single uninterrupted or contiguous location on the disk. Many system builders and technicians still believe that defragmenting a hard drive on a regular basis will keep a machine operating at peak performance. That was true with older PCs, but today we have 7200 rotations per minute disk drives with improved seek and latency times; many contain an 8MB cache buffer. For today's machines, defragmentation no longer has a big impact on system performance.

Defragmenting is still an important task. Excess power consumption and over heating can directly relate to a fragmented hard drive. If a file is not contiguous when the computer's operating system requests it, extra seeking on the disk is required. More importantly, if a hard drive crashes, the likelihood of successfully recovering data from the damaged drive improves greatly if the data is contiguous rather than fragmented. Defrag just doesn't cut it anymore when it comes to speeding up a PC.

The following tips will improve system performance on any PC running Windows XP and some will improve system security as well:

(Note - If your computer is on a Local Area Network or LAN at your business or you have a laptop that is at times on a workplace LAN, don't change ANY configuration settings without approval from your Network Administrator).

Before you begin, do a backup of your essential data

For details on performing a proper backup in Windows XP, go to Microsoft.com and enter 'Backup Windows XP' in the search bar.

There are a few basic system attributes that may need to be adjusted so that the system will allow you to make necessary changes:

I. Make sure that you're logged on to your machine as an 'Administrator'

II. Make sure that you can properly navigate 'System Files'-

Open any folder and go to 'Tools' > 'Folder Options...' > 'View'

Under 'Advanced Settings' make sure that the following boxes are checked:

'Display the contents of system folders'

'Show hidden files and folders'

Make sure that the following boxes are NOT checked:

'Hide extensions for known file types'

'Hide protected operating system files'

III. Enable the 'Run' feature in the 'Start' menu

Hit the 'Start' button. If 'Run...' is not visible in the 'Start' menu do the following:

'Right-click' on the 'Task Bar'. Go to 'Properties' > 'Start Menu'

If 'Start menu' is selected, select and utilize 'Classic start menu' instead.

(Many viruses replace the 'Folder.htt' file utilized by the Windows XP 'Start Menu' with a corrupt VBScript. Once infected, each time you utilize Windows Explorer to view a folder you will execute a virus that will dramatically slow down your machine.)

After selecting 'Classic start menu' hit 'Apply' then go to 'Customize...' and make sure that the 'Display Run' box is checked.

Now, let's crank it up!

Eliminate all spyware

Utilize free programs such as AdAware by Lavasoft and SpyBot Search & Destroy by Safer Networking. Once these programs are installed, make sure that there aren't any items listed or checked in the 'Ignore' section. Be sure to check for and download updates before starting a scan.

Run a complete virus scan

Update your anti-virus software and run a complete system virus scan. Many viruses are designed for the sole purpose of draining system resources. Make sure that you only have one anti-virus software package installed. Unlike anti-Spyware programs, mixing anti-virus software is a sure-fire way to spell disaster for system performance and reliability.

Run 'Disk Cleanup'

Open 'My Computer' from the desktop. 'Right-click' on your main hard drive, (usually 'C:'). Select 'Properties' and press 'Disk cleanup'. Allow it to run. Once finished, the 'Files to delete' window will show the file categories on the disk that can be deleted or compressed. Check the boxes by those that you don't need and press 'OK'.

Check each hard drive with 'scandisk'

With time and heavy use, data and physical problems can develop that drastically decrease system performance. Defragmenting the drive can help, but there are other issues such as lost clusters and bad sectors that the defragmentation utility cannot touch. It's a good idea to run XP's built in error checking utility on your drives every 2-3 months. This utility will scan your disks for errors and optionally attempt to correct them.

Open 'My Computer' from the desktop. 'Right-click' on your main hard drive, (usually 'C:'). Select 'properties' then 'tools' and under 'error checking' select 'check now...'. Check both 'Automatically fix file system errors' and 'Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors'. Restart your machine. 'Scandisk' will run during startup and can take a while depending on the size of your drive.

Clean out your 'Temporary Internet Files' and 'Cookies' folder

'Start' > 'Settings' > 'Control Panel' > 'Internet Options'

Select 'Delete Cookies...'. When the confirmation window appears, press 'OK'.

Select 'Delete Files...'. When the confirmation window appears, check 'Delete all offline content' and press 'OK'. (If you checked the 'Temporary Internet Files' box during 'Disk Cleanup' this should only take a second or two.)

Change 'Days to keep pages in history:' to 0. If you visit certain Web sites on a regular basis, add them to your 'Favorites'. Don't utilize 'History' to keep track of frequently visited sites.

Press 'OK'.

Eliminate programs that run during startup

Preventing programs from running at startup can be frustrating because there is no single location from which to stop them all. Some programs run because they're in the 'Startup' folder, others because they're attached to logon scripts. Others run due to Registry settings. With a little determination and persistence, you will be able to prevent unnecessary programs from running during startup.

Clean out your 'Startup' folder

C:Documents and Settings'your username'Start MenuProgramsStartup

Delete 'shortcuts' to unnecessary programs that run during startup. (You can also remove startup 'shortcuts' by going to 'Start' > 'Programs' > 'Startup', then 'right-clicking' on and deleting the 'shortcuts' you want to remove).

(Note - You can prevent all programs in your 'Startup' folder from running by holding down the 'Shift' key during startup. The items will still remain in the 'Startup' folder, however, and they will start the next time you boot).

Clean out your 'Scheduled Tasks' folder

C:WindowsTasks

Delete the 'shortcuts' to programs that you don't want to run automatically on a schedule.

Utilizing the 'System Configuration Utility'

The above steps will prevent most obvious programs from running during startup, but others are hidden. To view these programs, go to 'Start' > 'Run...' type 'msconfig' and press 'OK' or hit 'Enter'. You are now utilizing the 'System Configuration Utility'. Go to the 'Startup' tab and you will see the hidden programs that run during startup.

None of these programs are needed for Windows XP to startup properly. You do, however, want your anti-virus software and certain programs that your machine utilizes such as touchpad, graphics, audio and networking drivers to run during startup. This is where persistence pays off. Many times these programs aren't clearly marked. To identify one of these programs, go to 'Start' > 'Search' > 'For files and folders' > 'All files and folders'. Then select 'More advanced options' and make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders' and 'Search subfolders' are all checked. Then type the name of the unidentifiable program, ('SHSTAT', for example), then press 'Search'.

Once the program shows up in the 'Search Results' window, press 'STOP'. Then 'Right-click' on the program and select 'Open Containing Folder'. Now you are in the program's directory and should be able to identify it by reading the address bar. 'SHSTAT' resides in my ' C:Program FilesNetwork AssociatesVirusScan' folder, therefore, I want it to run during startup. 'Msmsgs', on the other hand, resides in my 'C:Program FilesMessenger' folder. I never use the Microsoft Instant Messenger, therefore, I would uncheck it in the 'System Configuration Utility'. Once you have unchecked each program that you don't want to run during startup, press 'Apply' then 'Close' and select 'Restart'. After startup you will receive a 'System Configuration Utility' message stating, "You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts." Simply check 'Don't show this message...' then select 'OK'. I realize that this is a borderline ridiculous process, but until Microsoft comes up with a better way to modify hidden startup programs... oh well.

Eliminate services that run during startup

Constantly running processes that help the operating system run or that provide support to other applications are known as 'services'. Many 'services' launch automatically at startup and constantly run in the background. While you need many of them, some are not required and they can slow down your system.

To view 'services' go to 'Start' > 'Run' and type 'services.msc' then press 'OK' or hit 'Enter'. To stop a 'service' from running during startup, 'Right-click' on the 'service' and select 'Properties'. Change 'Startup type:' to 'Manual' and press 'Apply'. Then press 'Stop'. The following are some of the common services that can be prevented from running during startup:

- Portable Media Serial Number Service

- Removable Storage

- Task Scheduler Service - Schedules unattended tasks to be run. If you don't schedule any unattended tasks, turn it off.

- Uninterruptible Power Supply Service - Manages an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) connected to your PC. If you don't utilize one, turn it off.

- Wireless Zero Configuration Service - only if you don't utilize a wireless internet connection.

- Telnet - (Certain versions of Windows XP Pro only) Unless you're a 'hacker'. Then you probably wouldn't be reading this article. Instead of changing 'Telnet' to 'Manual', go ahead and select 'Disable'.

Disable 'file indexing'

The 'Indexing service' extracts information from documents and other files on the hard drive and creates a "searchable keyword index." As you can imagine, this process can be quite taxing on any system.

The idea is that the user can search for a word, phrase, or property inside of any document or file. Windows XP's built-in search functionality can still perform these searches without the Indexing service. It just takes longer.

Open 'My Computer' from the desktop. 'Right-click' on your main hard drive, (usually 'C:'). Select 'Properties'. Uncheck 'Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching'. Then select 'Apply changes to C:, subfolders and files', then select 'OK'. If a warning or error message appears (such as 'Access is denied'), select the 'Ignore All button'.

Enable 'DMA' for each hard drive

'Start'>'Settings'>'Control Panel'>'Administrative Tools'>'Computer Management'>'Device Manager'

'Double-click' on the 'IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers device' and ensure that 'DMA', (Direct Memory Access), is enabled for each drive connected to the Primary and Secondary controller. Do this by double-clicking on 'Primary IDE Channel'. Select the 'Advanced Settings' tab. Ensure the Transfer Mode is set to 'DMA if available' for both Device 0 and Device 1. Repeat this process with the Secondary IDE Channel.

Turn off unnecessary animations

'Start'>'Settings'>'Control Panel'>'System'>'Advanced'

Windows XP offers many settings related animated icons, fonts, window displays, etc. When enabled these features utilize valuable system resources. under 'Performance' select 'Settings' then select 'Adjust for best performance'.

Eliminate unnecessary 'fonts'

The more fonts you have installed, the slower your system will become. While Windows XP handles fonts much more efficiently than previous versions of Windows, too many fonts, anything over 500, will noticeably tax your system.

Speedup Windows Explorer

Every time you open a folder there is a delay before the folder's content appears. Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers every time you open Windows Explorer. To correct this and to significantly increase browsing speed open 'My Computer' from the desktop. Select 'Tools' then 'Folder Options'. Select 'View' and uncheck 'Automatically search for network folders and printers'. Select 'Apply' then 'OK' and restart your machine.

Optimize Your 'Pagefile'

If you assign a 'fixed' file size to your 'pagefile' the operating system no longer needs to resize it to fulfill memory needs.

Windows XP sizes the 'pagefile' to about 1.5x the amount of actual physical memory by default. This is fine for systems with smaller amounts of memory, (under 512MB). If you have less than 512MB of memory, leave the 'pagefile' at its default size. If you have 512MB or more, change the 'pagefile' size ratio to 1:1.

'Right-click' on 'My Computer' from the desktop and select 'Properties' > 'Advanced'. Under 'Performance' choose 'Settings' > 'Advanced' > 'Virtual Memory' > 'Change'. Highlight the drive containing your page file, (usually 'C:'), and make the 'Initial size' of the file the same as the 'Maximum size' of the file. Then select 'Set' > 'OK' > 'OK' > 'OK'. Restart your machine.

Basic Computer Optimization - Make the Computer Always Run at Top Speed

We know that computers are the same as human beings which need to be taken good care of in order to run properly. That is, regular optimizations are needed for a computer so as to always run at top speed.

1) Optimize files/ programs on the computer. When you first bought the computer, it always comes with some installed programs. 3) Optimize file-accessing speed. It needs to be mentioned that, when booting up the computer or running programs, the system will call for some related data from the computer. If the files on the computer are put in order as the closes that we put in our wardrobe, it will be easy to be reached to. So to make computer run faster, you have to run the Disk Defragmenter regularly to increase file-accessing speed: just go to "Start"-> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools and then run Disk Defragmenter. It is recommended that you should defragment your computer regularly, especially after each large downloading, file creation or deletion.

4) Optimize Windows registry. No matter what program you install on the computer, it will add some registry entries into windows registry so as to make sure a proper running. But when uninstalling programs, some will leave some useless registry items /abandoned code in the registry. This will increase the difficulty to quickly start up the computer. So to make the computer run at top speed, it is necessary to always optimize windows registry to ensure a compact and easier-to-be-accessed registry.

Many people forget to optimize their computer and then they experience problems such as: slow start-up, crashes, errors, blue screens of death etc. until their computers become a complete pain to use.

If you are regularly experiencing any of the above mentioned problems it means your computer also definitely needs some optimization.

But let's first look at why computer optimization is so important. I will try to explain this is very common language so even the readers without much IT knowledge can understand.

Your operating system, Windows contains a large database called the registry. This database contains all the necessary information so Windows knows where all the system files, user files, settings etc. are located. The problem is Windows does not automatically optimize this database. Every time you turn on your computer new information is added to the registry, but it is barely ever removed. Therefore the longer you use your PC the more full the registry becomes. And even if a program or file is uninstalled or modified lots of information is left over in the registry. This left over unnecessary information is called corrupt or invalid registry keys.

And these invalid and corrupt registry keys are the ones responsible for the mentioned problems your computer is experiencing. The old invalid keys "confuse" your computer resulting in errors and slow-downs.

This means it is absolutely essential to keep your registry optimized. But how? Well it is easier than you probably think.

For this purpose special programs called Registry Cleaners or Registry Optimizers are developed. How old is too old? I had a chance to think about this question twice over the weekend. Once while pondering my fifty-somethingth birthday (as of today, I am the same age as Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons combined), and the other while deciding whether to upgrade my friend Lisa’s four-year-old Sony notebook to Windows 7.

The birthday will happen whether I want it or not. But as for that Sony? That took a little more thought. It would have been a no-brainer had this been a two-year-old PC that Lisa had downgraded to XP to avoid the tribulations of Vista. But this machine, once a triumph of Sony hardware engineering, could easily be deemed ready to retire.

After careful consideration, I finally decided to go ahead with the upgrade, taking careful notes and snapping lots of screen shots along the way. The XP-to-7 odyssey was an interesting one, with surprising results and several lessons I can share with anyone contemplating a similar adventure. Along the way I also tried out a new edition of Laplink’s PCmover software, which is specifically designed to ease this sort of migration. I found some surprises there as well.

Once you’ve cleaned up your PC, reboot and take a closer look at what’s using your RAM right now.

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to launch Task Manager, select the Processes tab, click View > Select Columns and make sure ‘Memory (Private Working Set)’ is checked). Click OK, select the ‘Show processes from all users’ button, then click the ‘Memory (Private Working Set)’ column header.

You’ll now see every process on your system, in the order in which they’re using memory. Browse down the list – are you running any background programs that you really don’t need? Turn them off if so. If you discover some memory hogs you don’t recognise, then enter their process names at Google to find out more.

If you really want to drill down into your PC’s activities, then there are two free Sysinternals tools that will prove invaluable. Autoruns will show you everything that loads when your Windows starts up, while Process Explorerdisplays running programs in great detail and shows you the resources they’re using. Troubleshooting is a basic input to the information technology field. At one point or another you’ll be asked to resolve a computer problem that does not have a clear-cut source/cause/resolution. They key to successful and quick troubleshooting is following the following process:

1. Dont’t assume you understand the Microsoft windows upgrade problem based on the users description. However document and attempt to understand what they are saying:
1. Document the symptom(s)
2. Document when did it first occur, has it occured before, who does it affect, what is all affected, what have you already tried to resolve it, can you make it occur again?
2. Watch the user make the problem happen (this will help you reproduce the problem to test your resolution, it also provides the opportunity to observe operator error)
3. From a reboot state, you try to reproduce the problem
4. Collect auxillary data from the system:
1. Application error messages, error logs, window event viewer, etc.
2. Check for application/vendor logs, as well as hidden logs
3. Evaluate other external sources which may be interfeering
5. Attempt to determine the cause of the problem.
6. Document newly discovered, relevant information, including source and symptoms
7. Consult resources – technet, web, other staff, vendor resources
8. Plan to isolate problem using the half-way method
9. Make one change at a time. Be sure to reboot systems as necessary. Many appliciations do not appear to need this step, but many times in troubleshooting this will help.
10. Determine a reasonable amount of time an issue should be resolved in, and then escalate as necessary

The last step is perhaps the most critical step, and while all are very important, failure to realize when you’re in over your head is essential. And while the inner “geek” in most IT people push them to figure it out on their own, many times the right choice is to escalate the issue. This may be escalating to a higher skilled technician, contacting the vendors fee-based technical support, or contacting a third party IT firm. Of course, it would be in your best interet to try and glean as much information from the next person in line and advance your own skills.

Check for viruses, spyware, and adware:
Hidden malicious or annoying programs often load at system start-up, slowing down the process. Get rid of them by scanning for viruses and pests regularly.
Don't have antivirus and spyware utilities? You're living dangerously! At Trend Micro, you can find a free online virus check. Ad-aware can help you remove spyware and adware from your system, or you can try at PestScan's free online detector.

Eliminate unneeded start-up programs:
In Windows 98, Me, and XP, you can see what programs load at start-up by going to Start, Run, typing msconfig, and clicking OK. (Msconfig isn't in Windows 2000, but programs like Startup Control Panel can fill in for it.)

Click the Startup tab to see a list of programs that launch at start-up. You'll need to experiment to see what you can do without. Just uncheck the boxes on the left-hand side of the Msconfig window to keep them from loading. The name and location of each file can help you figure out what it does.

In Windows XP, Msconfig has a Services tab that shows other application and OS components. Some can be unchecked so they won't load at start-up; others are essential to Windows. For more on services in XP and 2000, see "Supercharge Windows by Paring Unneeded Services."

Tune up the Registry:
Programs like RegClean can sweep out defunct hardware and software settings that can clog up your Registry. RegClean works for older versions of Windows. Defragment your hard drive:
Your hard drive doesn't always save a file in one place. Instead, it tucks parts of the file wherever there's free space. Use Disk Defragmenter on each of your drives to make those files contiguous, improving both start-up and overall Windows performance. Select Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter, select a drive, and click Start.

Memory on your hard drive is much less costly then RAM, so optimizing your virtual memory settings is a good choice to make your PC run as fast as possible. These days hard drives are filling up faster then ever, and all the time programs are leaving massive chunks of files behind, that even tried and true cleaning programs like ccleaner can not get rid of.

For virtual memory to make your PC as fast as possible you must have the extra space on your harddrive to allocate away from the storage of files and for the use of extra RAM. This is where a visual hard drive program called Tree Pie, Visdir or Disk Explorer saves the day. These programs show a graphical view of your hard drive allowing you to to see exactly what folders are taking up the most space and organize your machine better. in the Windows 95/98 era, conventional wisdom held that you should manually set your virtual memory, (ie., pagefile) size to at least 1.5 times the amount of RAM to optimize performance.

This still holds true but particularly for older machines, with less RAM, a very new and high end machine with a lot of RAM may see little to no performace increase while an older machine may see large benefits. for example on an old machine i tested this on i got around a 10 percent jump after upping the original pagefile size to two times the amount of RAM. Allocating any more virtual memory then this will make no difference to the speed of your computer and may have adverse effects.

To make sure you have enough space to set for virtual memory, lets get into a visual hard drive application, download either Tree Pie or Visual Directory Explorer. Check to see where you may have duplicate files, or junk files taking up unnecessary space. Many applications after they are deleted leave behind large files, using these programs as well as ccleaner, can greatly increase performance and extra space. Ccleaner can be used to quickly uninstall programs then delete the leftover registry entries for these programs, ccleaner can also delete, shady Active X registry entries and other registry entries that point to dead ends. Ccleaner will also do the standard clearing out your temp folders, cookies and recycling bin. Here is an episode of Hack5 that covers Tree Pie.

This type of test can also be performed on your serial portes. Be sure that you use a loop-back plug compatible with the testing software. This is because manufacturers utilize different loop-back wiring schemes in their products.

The loop-back plug test may not find every parallel port problem, but if it does indicate a printer troubleshooting, it’s probably accurate.

If you find a bad parallel port on a motherboard with integrated peripherals, you can disable the port in the CMOS Setup and install an add-on parallel port if you have an unused ISA slot. But check prices before you do this. You may be able to replace your motherboard with a new one for very little more than the cost of a new parallel port card.

Unlike previous versions of windows XP has simplified the process of printing color photos. Whether you took the picture yourself or received it via email, printing pictures has never been so easy.

Find the Pictures you want to print
When you save a picture from an email, or from your digital camera, XP should automatically save them into your My Pictures folder. To find the pictures you want to print, click on the start button, and then click on the My Pictures menu item, which is usually near the top on the right hand side of the menu.

Using the Photo Printing Wizard to Select your Photos
Once the wizard appears, click on the next button, to move to the photo selection stage. You should now see your thumbnails of your pictures. If you have a lot of pictures, then use the scrollbar on the right hand side to scroll through them all.

In the top right hand corner of each thumbnail there should be a small box with a tick in it. This means that the wizard has selected that picture for printing. Usually the wizard starts off selecting every available picture for printing. Now select the individual pictures you want to print by clicking on the empty tick box in the top corner of the picture.
Please note, that the tick won't appear on the picture when you print it out.

Selecting a layout
Once you have picked all of the pictures you want to print, click on the next button a the bottom of the wizard. Most people only have one printer installed so you should just see your usual printer listed on this next page. If not, select the printer you want to use from the list provided, then click next.

Once you have the layout you want, just click the next button and windows XP will start printing your pictures.

Mikko H. Hypponeen, chief research officer at F-Secure, points out that Windows 7 retains a characteristic in Windows Explorer, the operating system's file management application, that has allowed attackers to deceive Windows users since the Windows NT era.

Specifically, Windows Explorer provides a way to hide a file's extension. Virus writers use this feature to disguise executable files as something more innocuous, such as text files, Hypponeen explains in a blog post.

Summer 2009 may look a lot brighter for Microsoft executives after seeing Net Applications’ latest market share numbers and how they compare to the competition. Windows Visa gains market share at a faster pace than Windows XP drops. Windows 7 has posted strong gains already; however, they are not quite enough to put Microsoft in the black, yet.

Key trends in March reveal that the decline of Windows XP is accelerating, as the operating system lost 0.681 percentage points, as opposed to only 0.231 points in February. Windows XP remains the dominant operating system with an estimated share of 62.851%. Windows Vista continues to play the role of the fastest growing operating system in absolute numbers and gained 0.94 points over the past three months and 0.511 points between February and March alone. Vista now stands at 23.421%.

Windows 7 now has a greater market (0.211%) share than the remaining copies of Windows 98 still in use (0.191%), Net Applications said. Windows 2000, NT, Me and 98 gave up a combined 0.17 points over the past three months. The combined Windows market share was 88.141% in March, according to the market research firm.

Apple came in at 9.771%, up from 9.61% in the prior month. Mac OS X 10.5 was the driving force behind this trend, showing a gain of 0.56 points in March, from 5.641% to 6.01% market share. Linux also showed improved share, which climbed from 0.88% to 0.901%.

Probably the most impressive market share number in the entire listing is Apple’s iPhone OS, which is estimated at 0.491%, which is more than half of the entire Linux market share. It is more than twice the market share of Windows 7. In comparison, Google’s Android holds only 0.061%, which is, by the way, twice the market share of the Playstation 3 (0.031%), according to Net Applications.

Although it's been almost five years since its surfacing onto the World Wide Web, an Osama Bin Laden (Terrorist) -themed computer virus continues to find its way into e-mail inboxes.
So far there have been no reports of an infection in the area, but a few people have received e-mails warning them not to open anything with a subject line saying "Osama Bin Laden (Terrorist) Captured"

"A couple of guys around here have heard of it," said Aaron Williams, assistant manager at EC Computers. "One said they received an e-mail saying not to open it. Hopefully we won't have anyone coming in with the virus problem."

The virus began in 2004, according to Snopes.com, when e-mails referring to the terrorist leader's capture or suicide began circulating on the Internet. With such a tempting e-mail subject, many would open the e-mail and download the attachment which claimed to be a video or picture, but was actually a file for the Backdoor.Hacarmy.D Trojan horse.

In 2005, a similar e-mail made the rounds again, but with a version of the Psyme Trojan.
A hoax virus followed in mid-2006, with subject such as "Invitation," "Merry Christmas" or "Olympic Torch," said the site.

Another e-mail has been passed around the Internet as well, warning computer users of the legit and bogus e-mails.
"E-mails with pictures of Osama Bin Laden hanged are being sent and the moment that you open these e-mails your computer will crash and you will not be able to fix it," said one such message.

In 2006, the site said both Trojan viruses easily can be found and removed from a computer with updated virus removal software, but computer technicians said it's better to avoid opening e-mails with the suspect subject lines.

"We try to educate people not to open attachments and things like that," said Williams. "We haven't had a problem yet, and even though repairs are a big part of our business, we want people to be safe on the Net and not get into trouble."

How much you pay for your computer over a year's time, or the entire lifetime of the computer, depends greatly on your choice of operating system. Hard to believe? Do the calculations for yourself.

Let's look at the costs beyond the purchase price of the computer. The following list outlines additional ownership costs.

Internet access has been turned off to most computers. The IT department is dealing with a computer virus that uses the Internet to spread itself. The city says it's affecting a "significant amount" of computer work stations.

The City is currently dealing with a computer virus that is affecting a significant amount of computer work stations within the City system.

The ability to provide essential services such as 9ll, Police, Fire, traffic services and building permits are not affected at this time. However, because the virus appears to be using the Internet to spread itself, Web access has been shut off for most City computers. Outside users should be able to access the City's Web site at this time, however, some intermittent outages have occurred. If users are having trouble accessing www.springfieldmo.gov and still need to contact the City, they can call 864-1010 to reach the Department of Public Information.

The Information Systems Department is working continuously with the City's virus removal provider, McAfee, Inc., to resolve the issue. The virus does not appear to have affected City servers, and there does not appear to be any issue of lost data or information at this time. The virus appears to be spreading via Windows executable files, not through e-mails or e-mail attachments. The City's e-mail system is operating normally.

Are you on the never ending pursuit for more performance? Well if you're a gamer or just playing nuts about Computer optimization this article will put you in good sted because I'm going show you one of the best and not to mention easiest ways to squeeze some extra performance from your beloved PC.

So what is the System Configuration? Well it serves more than one task so it's quite hard to narrow down. But one of the main functions is where you can have easy access to all your programs running on Windows. But like I said, the System Configuration does give you access to other options as well.

So you know a little about the System Configuration, lets start tuning it up for faster PC performance.

First of all you want to go to Start or the Start orb for Vista owners and type MSconfig This will bring up the System Configuration panel.
From the System Configuration you'll want to start on the General tab and make sure that you have "Selective startup" Selected. This will give you full control and allow you to tinker to your heart's content.

Once you've done that you'll want to go to the "Startup" tab. What the startup tab shows is all the third party programs that automatically start running when you boot up your PC. So simply untick the ones you don't want running in the background at start up and this will free up more of your PC's resources like the CPU and Ram to focus on the programs that matter to you.
You can turn them all off for best performance but I would recommend keeping your anti virus running to protect your PC. And if you've got an third party fire wall I would recommend to keep that running as well. But everything else can get the chop.

Once you've done that click "Apply" and move on to the "Services" tab.
The Services section works in the same way as the "Startup" tab but this is where all your Windows programs are running. Now I wouldn't recommend turning them off in the System Configuration as it's better to turn them off in another section of Windows.
So instead go to the bottom of the panel and tick the "Hide all Microsoft services" This will hide all the Microsoft services and leave the third party programs. Once again I would recommend turning everything of barring your anti virus and click apply.

Now moving on to the "Boot" tab. You want to look for the "No GUI boot" and tick it. What does GUI stand for? I haven't got the foggiest but what I do know is when you turn it on it deactivates the Windows loading screen when your booting up your PC. What this does is give you a slightly faster boot times. It's nothing recording braking but if your PC is taking ages to boot up I guess ever second counts eh.

The next thing you want to do within the "Boot" tab is click on the "Advanced options..." A new Window will open and from in there you want to tick the "Number of processor" box. This will allow you to select the number of cores you want your PC to boot up with. For example if you've got a duel core you would select 2 but if you've got a quad core CPU you would select 4 and so on.
What this does is tells you computer how many CPUs to use when booting so instead of booting up using one core, your PC will now boot up using the maximum amount of CPU cores which will result in quicker boot times again. Once you made the changes click "OK"
